Clevo Keyboard Backlight Control For Linux

I've just set up the keyboard led control on a new Clevo NL55PU laptop with Linux Mint 21.3 Edge installed. To do this it is necessary to temporarily disable UEFI Secure Boot before running the instructions for the new version and rebooting. If required, UEFI Secure Boot can be re-enabled later.

Using the Fn key and the /, *, +, or - numeric keypad keys will give the following:
Fn and / steps through the led colours available
Fn and * turns the keyboard leds on or off
Fn and + increases the led brightness
Fn and - decreases the led brightness

NovaCustom has been very helpful in supplying this fix, and helping me getting it to work.

jack5766 Please note that this is not for coreboot, it is for Insyde proprietary firmware only. Our Dasharo coreboot distribution already has integrated firmware support for the backlight control.

If you are running proprietary Insyde firmware: I have accepted two pull requests today that should allow you to use the application again on modern kernels. You can simply try again.

Is there a way to use backlight keyboard by command line? I tried it by different way but i do not success so far

vdel Since it's based on Tuxedo's application, maybe this sets the keyboard illumination to red?

novacustom This doesn't work for me, having tried installing the tuxedo_keyboard module using the lastest method laid out above. I also tried editing /etc/modprobe.d/tuxedo_keyboard.conf to change the value to "RED".

But perhaps that is because I'm running the Dasharo firmware, and this isn't designed to work with it.

Is there a method to change the KB backlight color under Dasharo firmware?

peter It's for proprietary Insyde firmware only.

Dasharo coreboot has the KB backlight control built-in, you can just use these Fn shortcuts to change the keyboard illumination. Some models such as the NV41, V54 and V56 Series only support white keyboard illumination.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your answer, i made a huge step in my search🤩😀😀!

(at the begining i have two problems, sound problem and backlight keyboard issue on an XMG PRO[23], clevo computer. On some distro i succeed to install one piece of my problem and not the second one and vice versa! For the sound part of the problem, it is maybe due to Wayland and Pulseaudio/pipewire for ubuntu 24.04. Quite buisy these days, i will link my futur solutions from debian or ubuntu forum at the end of this topic later ;-)

For the backlight keyboard, i abandoned instructions with your repository:

I have lot of error, and my computeur seems to be not recognized!

Only for backlight Keayboard, i succeeded by three ways:

1/ Install Tuxedo OS: works fine out of the box (but no sound, another problem related to pulseaudio /pipewire and maybe wayland, but it's not the problem here)

or
2/ For Kubuntu and Parrot OS. I fix it by installing .deb found on tuxedo website(tried many times, some web pages seems to be outdated, i succeed by following this way:

I grab only drivers from this link:

sudo reboot
and it works without installing Tuxedo Control Center

You can mange your keyboard lights as following for example, change color of leds 3 and 4 with color 255 125 0 and led number 7 with color 255 0 0:
echo 255 125 0 | sudo tee /sys/class/leds/rgb:kbd_backlight_3/multi_intensity /sys/class/leds/rgb:kbd_backlight_4/multi_intensity & echo 255 0 0 | sudo tee /sys/class/leds/rgb:kbd_backlight_7/multi_intensity

or
3/ For Pop OS. I fix it by installing .deb found on tuxedo website:

sudo apt install ./tuxedo*.deb

sudo reboot

and it works, tuxedo control center needed👍(and probably by command line to)

For now i have a full working laptop with 😍:

Pop OS 22.04 with Xorg
Backlit Keyboard fixed with Tuxedo packages
Sound issue fixed by following this link: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/2018134
